The rise of Filipino boxing - Pacquiao opens doors and gives hope to his people

Wouldn’t it be great as an American boxing fan to be able to read an article entitled, “Floyd Mayweather Jr making America proud!” Or something close to that? America has not dominated the boxing world such as it used to back in the 80′s and before.  The new wave of boxing has been brought in by current 8 division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
There has not been a fighter that has arrived on scene, dominated, and has become a household name since Mike Tyson.
Manny Pacquiao used to sell cigarettes in General Santos City and now he sits in Congress and he just won his 8th title in as many divisions.  This is just unheard of and merits first ballot hall of fame consideration.  Pacquiao will most definitely be a first ballot hall of famer.
So what has Pacquiao done besides win titles and earn lots of money? He gives back.  Pacquiao gives a lot of money away to those who are less fortunate.  He gave over 3 million pesos to help the victims of Hurricane Frank.  Pacquiao has built hospitals, schools, gives to charities, and feeds hungry people. He has touched the lives of an entire nation.
With the success of Manny Pacquiao has come an insurgence of boxing gyms throughout the Philippines.  Thousands of young Filipinos have taken to the gyms and have put on boxing gloves.  Pacquiao has inspired kids that may have gone bad to take to the gym instead.  They have set their own goals and their own dreams to pursue. This all courtesy of Manny Pacquiao, the man that has done it all.
The Philippines has gone from an obscure nation of poverty filled with unheard of athletes to a nation of hope, and right in the middle of the map with an 8 division world champion heading up the front.  Donaire, Penelosa, Bautista, Viloria, Mayol, are just a few fighters with Filipino blood that have benefited from the success of Manny Pacquiao.  Former world champ Rodel Mayol is managed by Manny Pacquiao, and has certainly benefited from the path that Pacquiao has carved out.
The Philippines is definitely a country that has made it’s mark in the boxing world.  Pacquiao has pioneered the run to the top and many more are filing into line behind him.  Of course they may never be another Manny Pacquiao, but there will be people who will have a better life because of him. Some will reach heights that they probably wouldn’t have without the existence of a Manny Pacquiao.
America hasn’t had a fighter that we can all be proud of in many years.  Sure there are great fighters in America, but none of them have inspired the country.  None of them pack arenas and lower the crime when they fight.  Pacquiao has not only risen to the top, he’s set up camp and plans on being there for awhile.  With that success comes money, fame, responsibility, and so far Manny has been up for those challenges as well.
Imagine where boxing would be today if Manny Pacquiao never existed.  The sport would still thrive on, but it sure wouldn’t have been as exciting as it has been during the Pacquiao era.
