Taxman Counter Punches Pac-Man

Manny Pacquiao’s iconic status in the Philippines will not spare him from the tax man.

Government officials made this clear in Manila on Tuesday but denied they were harassing the superstar.

The eight-time world champion, who is also a member of parliament, faces a criminal case for obstructing a tax investigation into his earnings.

Finance secretary Cesar Purisima says the government is only doing its job in demanding that Pacquiao, one of the world’s highest-paid sportsmen, submit records of his earnings to the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Pacquiao has vowed to fight the case in court and accused the bureau of singling him out for harassment, without saying why he was being targeted, but Purisima has denied this was the case.

“I don’t think the bureau will dare to harass an eight-time world champion. He is a national icon,” Purisima told reporters.

“We love Mr Pacquiao, we respect Mr Pacquiao … but we have a duty to make sure we review everyone’s income tax return. I don’t think congressman Pacquiao should take this personally.”

Pacquiao says the suit has cost him millions of dollars in endorsements. And he is ready to fight it out in court.

And he feels the case smacks of harassment. Singling him out “smacks of bad faith designed to tarnish my reputation … They tarnished my name,” Pacquiao, 33, said.

They’re only asking for documents! How can the BIR do their job if Pacquiao is stopping them from doing it??

Just give them the papers and be done with it!

QUESTION: If Manny is indeed irresponsible with his own accounting, how then can he be responsible for the earnings of a nation?

Fixing his bad accounting practices will only help the nation should he become president in the future.

Denying true responsibility will only hurt the Philippines. We simply can’t have a careless president.

This tax people just wants to be popular, they could have done this behind close doors and not in public. Pacquiao is a world figure in sports and will be tarnished with this. Wake up people it’s the BIR.
