Who is Gilbert Brown and What Can He Do for the Celtics?

It’s no secret that the Boston Celtics are going to have get younger, a fact Danny Ainge knows all too well. Ainge recently said as much on WEEI, and fans like me are well aware that the upcoming season will almost certainly be the last hurrah for the big three. This year’s draft was arguably a good haul, with Purdue’s top two scorers joining the Cs, including big man JaJuan Johnson(notes). Gilbert Brown could be yet another solid offseason addition.

Pau Gasol: To keep or not to keep, that is the question

LOS ANGELES — In the still of the NBA postseason, when the news is slow and the rumors are fast, the Los Angeles Lakers are making a lot of noise. Trade noises, that is.

Although the talks involve Lamar Odom and a handful of disposable Lakers, the eye of the gossip swirls violently around Pau Gasol, LA’s 7-foot, 250-pound center-forward, who can be electrifying on his best days, yet so painfully drab on his worst days.

Gasol played all 82 games last regular season, norming 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per. But his numbers declined badly in the playoffs —- 13.1 points and 7.8 rebounds —- making it way easier for the eventual champions Dallas Mavericks to sweep LA in a one-sided second round series. Pacquiao, Mayweather, Martinez and the biggest argument in boxing!

The Greatest: Muhammad Ali stands over Sonny Liston in 1965

Boxing, like all sports, is a fount of passionate opinions.

Many of them are poured out in pubs, clubs and wine bars around the world as well as at ringside and it is almost impossible to reach an absolute consensus.

Muhammad Ali is generally regarded  as the GOAT – Greatest Of All Time – but not even on that does everyone agree. Continue reading “Pacquiao, Mayweather, Martinez and the biggest argument in boxing!” »

Take this (open book) test right now, Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

By Michael Marley,

Even his worst, sworn enemies would have to admit that, when at his office, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never given less than his all.

Ditto for the gym, the one exception being the overplayed fluke sparring session when southpaw Paul Spadafora, a big talent who has problems with his social conduct, caught him not in tiptop condition.

If Manny Pacquiao is the salt of the earth Pinoy who was born in an extreme cradle of poverty, then Mayweather is the pepper who adds needed spice to the present day fistic scene.

Has it escaped everyone’s attention that, just as students nationwide are chanting “no more classes, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks” and going on summer vacation, Mayweather is going back to his square ring classroom? Pacman insists Marquez is dangerous

By NICK GIONGCO

MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao is not looking at Juan Manuel Marquez as somebody out to cash a paycheck and retire.

Told about the overwhelming 8-1 odds in his favor, Pacquiao told the Bulletin over the weekend that Marquez remains a dangerous foe and that taking him for granted is tantamount to jumping off a cliff.

Pacquiao is facing Marquez on Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and despite the odds, the Filipino star said he has to be in top shape. Continue reading “Pacman insists Marquez is dangerous” »

Arum wary of Marquez’ style

MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank chairman Bob Arum knows that WBO welterweight champion Rep. Manny Pacquiao won’t take challenger Juan Manuel Marquez lightly because the Mexican’s style is tailor-fit to negate the Filipino icon’s strengths.

“I think Marquez is a big test for Manny,” said Arum from Los Angeles in a recent telephone interview. “Manny is aware of that. Their first two fights were close. Manny has to be at his best to win over Marquez.”

Pacquiao and Marquez are set to slug it out at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Nov. 12. At stake will be Pacquiao’s WBO 147-pound title although the fighters agreed to face off at a catchweight of 144 considering Marquez is moving up from the lightweight division. Marquez is the reigning WBC 135-pound titlist. Continue reading “Arum wary of Marquez’ style” »

Pacquiao to choose network to air PPV

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao should have a say in choosing the network that will carry his next fight through pay-per-view.

“He’s the co-promoter so he needs to be part of the decision,” said Franklin Gacal, Pacquiao’s legal counsel.

Bob Arum of Top Rank said the other day the decision would come next week whether it’s HBO/Warner or Showtime/CBS.

Arum said there’s a lot of money involved, and from the $10 million that Showtime coughed up for the Shane Mosley fight last May, this one could go as high as $15 million.

Arum said it’s unbelievable how huge HBO and Showtime are willing to put in for the pay-per-view rights for Pacquiao’s next fight. Continue reading “Pacquiao to choose network to air PPV” »

HBO may air Manny’s latest fight

MANILA—Showtime has the inside track, but HBO may yet spring a surprise and make a solid bid to air the third fight of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez trilogy on Nov. 12.

After all, a Pacquiao headliner, regardless of the opponent, is a guaranteed blockbuster as proven by the pound-for-pound king’s 147-pound clash with Shane Mosley on May 7.

Though perceived to be a mismatch after it was first announced, Pacquiao-Mosley raked in a lofty 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, worth about $71 million, for Showtime, which was given the broadcast rights by fight promoter Top Rank over longtime partner HBO.

As a result, Showtime enjoys the right of first refusal in Pacquiao-Marquez III.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports tweeted that Top Rank chief Bob Arum will meet with Showtime executives today to receive its initial offer. Continue reading “HBO may air Manny’s latest fight” »

In recent months, there has been reports of declining viewership from different websites for boxing articles especially if the topic is not about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

For avid boxing fans and industry critics, the declining readership trends are quite alarming. They predict the sport is headed for extinction if no changes are made to salvage whatever is left of the once-popular ancient sport.

And unless some changes are made now, its popularity will continue to decline as promoters are more concerned about financial survival than anything else.

In the last two years, boxing stories have revolved around the twice-scuttled Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight. For a writer who wish to generate more reads for his articles, he only has to write anything about these two guys and he gets the viewer’s attention.

The long-awaited Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight is seen by many as a “shot in the arm” for this “dying sport” and there are quite a number of reasons why the fight needs to happen. Continue reading “Manny Pacquaio vs. Floyd Mayweather: 5 Reasons This Fight Needs to Happen” »

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao for several years has been the second biggest seller of pay-per-views in the United States behind rival Floyd Mayweather.

Since becoming a fixture on U.S talk shows, adverts and with the absence of Mayweather however, Pacquiao’s fanbase has been growing, and he recently achieved his biggest pay per view sales to date against Shane Mosley.

In November, Pacquiao fights Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time, and even though he is expected to win, most expect the fight itself to be a more interesting encounter than any of his recent bouts.
