Morales to face Mayweather; Say it isn’t so!

Just when you thought, it was going to turn around. Boxing is preparing for another mistake to baffle its fans.

“You know who the little fellow that they already approached? It’s Erik Morales,” Arum stated today “And Erik will confirm it – absolutely. Erik has been approached to make the fight. He’ll take it for the money. I’m sure he’ll take it for the money. Why wouldn’t he?”

Eric Morales (52-7,36ko’s) looked overweight and about ready to retire when he was gifted a title fight against little-known Pablo Cano recently at the MGM Grand.

The fact is  many writers, and fans figured this was a gift title for the 35-year-old fighter that has thrilled fans with so many great bouts, but instead perhaps it was a warm up to legitimize a bout with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If this news develops as is being reported, then the big question remains, whether Floyd drops to 140 pounds or will Morales, who already looked large at 140 against Cano move up to 147.

It is doubtful that this fight can be made into a PPV event because HBO still has not released the official numbers as to just what Ortiz-Mayweather has done. The promoters associated with the event have released numbers that have yet to be backed by HBO.

Will fans shell out to see another fight between two aging stars after being taken in several previous events?

That is a question that remains to be answered if this bout is made.

After all the talk about Pacquiao and Sergio Martinez, Floyd it appears to have set up a bout with an opponent that may draw fans but will do little in the way of challenging Mayweather’s speed in the ring.

Mayweather has often accused Pacquiao of fighting his leftovers or people he recently defeated, and now it appears that Mayweather is doing so. Taking on Morales, several years after Manny took 2 out of three bouts from Eric, dating back all the way to 2005.

Though I respect and admire Eric’s accomplishments, there are several more challenging bouts for Floyd that would solidify his supposed P4P supremacy.

Should   HBO televise this bout they should never complain about fans, events, or the sport of boxing not being supported as a main stream sport any longer. It is fights like these that have resulted in comedic PPV numbers when compared to closed circuit events from the seventies.

Ali – Frazier produced 300 million buys on closed circuit, and Mayweather brags on 1.25 million unconfirmed buys.
