Sports Extra [ Commentary ] - Bill Gallo is dead at age 88. We buried sports journalism in his casket.

Mr. Gallo, the prolific sports cartoonist and columnist for the NY Daily News, passed away on May 10 after a bout with pneumonia. He spent 70 years honing on his craft.

Gone is a gentleman of the press, and a wonderful human being.

oxing was Bill Gallo‚Äôs favorite sport. “He knew everybody and everybody knew Bill,” said boxing historian Bert Sugar. “Everyone loved him . . . . He was probably the second-most outstanding symbol of New York, other than the Statue of Liberty.” Sugar continued, “He was a throwback, yet always au courant. He straddled both worlds, old and new.”

Bill Gallo received the James J. Walker Award from the Boxing Writers Association of America and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. A World War II veteran, he wrote of his experiences in the Pacific and was…
