Arum not interested in pitting Pacquiao vs Martinez

MANILA, Philippines — Boxing promoter Bob Arum has rebuffed a proposal to have his top fighter, Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao, pitted against against middleweight king Sergio Martinez of Argentina at 155-pound catch weight.

Pacquiao won the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title by beating Antonio Margarito while Martinez retained the WBC middleweight belt by knocking out Paul Williams.

“Yes, it is an absurd proposal at least right now,” Arum told Michael Marley of Examiner.com.

On fight night at the Cowboys Stadium against Margarito, the 148-lb. Pacquiao gave away a 17-lb. advantage to the 165-lb. Margarito. Aside from the disparity in weight, the 5’11” Tijuana tornado also enjoyed a 5-inch height advantage over the 5’6” Filipino champion.

Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella suggested that Pacquiao take on the Argentine since the Filipino doesn’t “duck any challenge”.

Arum said he would rather have Pacquiao fight again in the welterweight division (147lbs.).

“Manny is going to fight as high as 147 pounds, for right now, and that’s that. I’ve got Freddie Roach’s approval and agreement on that… Manny has other options at this point,” he said.

After retaining his WBC belt in a spectacular fashion, Martinez has been considered by some boxing fans as a possible opponent for Fighter of the Decade Pacquiao.

The Argentine struck Williams with a crisp left hook to the jaw in the 2nd round, sending the American face down to the canvass in their title clash on Saturday (Sunday, in Manila).

Doubtful

Arum, who has been trying to arrange a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Maywether, Jr., expressed skepticism over including Martinez in the Filipino’s hit list.

“You know, it’s really not fair to talk about having a Manny Pacquiao, or, even, a Floyd Mayweather, go up two weight divisions to fight Sergio Martinez,” Arum said inFanhouse.com.

The Top Rank honcho added that even if Pacquiao wins against the 5’10″ Martinez, he fears that the wear-and-tear could take a toll on the Filipino’s health.

“Because even if he beat Martinez, which I believe that he would, and even if he turns it into a fairly easy fight, because he’s fighting someone who is a much bigger, stronger guy, he could get hurt like he did in there against Antonio Margarito,” he said.

Arum earlier said he no longer plans to have Pacquiao face bigger guys, citing that the Filipino superstar was quite hurt in the Margarito fight despite walking away with his 8th world title.

“At this point, I don’t want to put Manny in with another big guy, a guy even bigger than Margarito,” he said in a report by Boxing Futures.com.

Arum earlier said another David versus Goliath match could risk Pacquiao’s health.

“That fight really affected him physically. He took a lot more beating in that fight than he did in his others. He got hurt. He’s banged up a little bit. It’s tough giving away that kind of weight and size,” he had said.
