Alex Ariza Discusses Why Pacquiao didn’t Knockout Shane Mosley Part 1 of 3

There has been a lot of heat put on key members of Team Pacquiao regarding why Manny Pacquiao let Shane Mosley off the hook last Saturday night May 7TH, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Timothy James from MpBoxing sat down with Alex Ariza and asked him point blank direct questions regarding these attacks and also his evaluation on Manny Pacquiao’s performance.

We also discussed what caused the cramp in Manny Pacquiao’s leg.

This is just a part of what Alex Ariza had to say:

MpBoxing: Why did Manny Pacquiao not attack Sugar Shane Mosley more?

Alex Ariza: Anybody could Monday morning quaterback you could come up with a million reasons why two fighters did not look the way everyone wanted them to look or anticipated them to look like. The reality is it takes two people to fight. If one fighter is coming forward and one fighter is going backward it is not going to be the most exciting fight in the world. Nobody is going to be happy when Manny Pacquiao does not knock someone out.

MpBoxing: Anybody that Manny Pacquiao fights right now there is a possibility that after they feel the power of Manny Pacquiao they too might start to run like Mosley did and Cotto did. Do to the fact that Manny’s style is not to go after them and knock them out and he likes people to come at him, do you think Manny Pacquiao needs to learn a new style or implement some type of strategy so Manny can cut off the ring. Does Manny Pacquiao need to learn to attack the opponent when he is going backward, like a Duran or a Julio Cesar Chavez did?

Alex Ariza: When you have one fighter coming forward and another fighter in survival mode or retreating mode doesn’t matter if you cut him off. It is a no win situation. You are going to get one or two punches off, you cut him off then he just starts retreating again. The reality is Mosley thought about pulling the trigger and after the 3rd round when he got knocked down he just realized if he through punches he would have gotten knocked out.

MpBoxing: Some of the articles that have come out have actually attacked members of Team Pacquiao, and to my surprise, one of the articles that came out attacked you personally today. The article stated you are not the right strength and conditioning coach for Manny Pacquiao because of the fun you guys have together.

Alex Ariza: you got to remember every athlete is different. Any good strength and conditioning coach is going to evaluate each athlete differently. You got to remember Manny Pacquiao is 32 years old. He is not a 24 year old kid. He knows what he is doing. He is a grown man. He is not used to being scolded and told what do to. The approach to Manny Pacquiao has to be completely different then an approach to someone like a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or any of those younger guys who need that hard core coaching.

Hi tim,

I fully agree with alexs foughts on the fight it takes two too fight, But after mosley felt mannys power he would retreat and hold constantly, he went into survival mode after round 3, mannys power is just amazing, 3rd time mosley has ever been knocked down!!, I also noticed aswell how gassed mosley was after round 4-5, and i remembered alexs article about high altitude training, I also think anybody to attack alexs work, are stupid and dont know a lot about fitness or boxing, Alex is a proffesional, Look at amir khan when he left alex he was awful in the mccloskey fight, What a way to attack alex by saying alex and manny have to much fun!!! hes in a no win situation becuase if alex was not having fun with manny the haters would say alex is not interested,

Tim if youre doing a video blog could you ask alex these questions

Is milk really bad, ive been researching that farmers inject animal milk with a hormone that a human produces and when consumed on top of cow milk, Can lead to cancer

Does sprinting increase testosterone production more than jogging

And will heavy weight lifting once every week, slow me down make me sluggish, When im doing explosive plyos and isometrics, Becuase if got no punching power so i fought if i lift heavy weights once a week plus doing explosive training i,ll ger faster and even more powerful

How did Pacquiao’s left foot cramped? What were the cause of this? can you explain this more and if his foot didnt cramp do you think Pacman could of KO mosley? Pacman didnt show alot of foot work and angle shots

Comment by jess — May 11, 2011 @ 10:16 pm

Thanks for the interview, but I don’t think Ariza knows what it means to cut off the ring since Manny barely did it in the fight. What he did instead was just follow or chase Mosley around. It made Manny look he couldn’t adjust once his opponent becomes a defensive moving target, which is the type of fighter Manny isn’t used to fighting (Mayweather). He still looked better than the scared Mosley, but Mosley’s biggest tactic of all was to befriend Manny in the ring by hugging and tapping gloves, doing high fives. It was sickening as a fight fan to see Mosley hug him at the start of round 12 like “yay we did it! we made it to the 12th round!”

You really should be asking Freddie the strategy questions. I’d like to hear his take on the fight. Also ask Freddie why Manny’s performance did not match the comments coming out of his training camp. All I heard was how this was Manny’s best camp ever, yet the fight did not show it. Why didn’t you ask Ariza what happened with Manny’s calf muscle?

Comment by Pacpower — May 11, 2011 @ 10:33 pm

Looks like Ariza didn’t know what cutting off the ring means….if Roberto Duran was the one fighting Shane last saturday he wouldn’t just follow him around but instead trap him and blast him into pieces. I’m a die hard fan of Pac but was also disappointed with his performance he looked like he couldn’t adapt or change his tactics once he faced a defensive moving target and not the come forward fighters that he’s used to fighting. He’s the P4P king and the onus in proving that he can adapt to any situation or change/adjust his tactics to get results is on him and not in the opponent. After all the hype on tv and how this was the best training camp that Pacquiao ever had as per the words of coach Roach, Pacquiao didn’t perform to his full potential….it’s almost a bad omen for a pacman training camp to not have any distractions now lol

Hey there Tim,

I may be the biggest non filipino pacquiao fan and I would like you to comment on below.

1.) Whenever i am online, i always check PACLAND for Manny Pacquiao updates because they do a great job on updating pacquiao fans.
Your site is new to me, i only heard about it during Mosley Camp. I even saw your video saying that you wont be doing what PACLAND is doing but it seems that you are already are. I dont really care if you want do it as long as you keep your updates properly, same as or better than PACLAND.
FYI: I noticed that they are not posting any new articles on time. It seems that they are already pissed off.

2.) I like your videos. In fact, i think you provide much better coverage than FIght Camp 360 crew. I just dont like the way you encourage Team Pacquiao with their stupid jokes/pranks amongst them. Its silly and just shows that Pacquiao tolerates stupidity and offensive pranks.

3.) What happened to Elie Seckbach? He does a great job too. Did you ask Pacquiao to keep him out?

Remember guys, this is part 1 of 3. A lot of questions you have asked will be answered in the next two parts. Please stay tuned for mpboxing to release part 2 and part 3. We agree we should also ask Freddie Roach some of these questions. Thank you for the input and the suggestions. We really appreciate it. Also please be very thinkful to Mr. Ariza for taking his time out for the fans. He really cares about what you guys want, so he takes a considerable amount of time throughout his day to help this site. This is the only site that will get the fans the truth and nothing but the truth

Each group has its own culture. In Manny’s group, the jokes identify its culture. They are so tightly knit group that even offensive jokes to you would mean nothing to them. And those good jokes to you would mean lame to them. So, if you don’t cater with the jokes of Manny’s group then just ignore the jokes. Do not impose what you think is proper or not on other’s culture. After all, you are not a member of their group. And surely, they are not minding you. Mind your own business, ok?

Comment by Gil P. Acosta — May 12, 2011 @ 4:08 am

Why are you guys asking for blood? Manny did his part. You are always asking for blood. Manny understands that Mosley was in a retreat mode. He did not want to engage. Manny did not want to press the issue. He is not barbaric to a point that he annihilates them. Boxing is a sport, remember?

Comment by SpongeBob — May 12, 2011 @ 4:17 am

i guess Manny’s high altitude training in Baguio and dehydration to some extent, which Ariza alluded to, contributed to the cramps. Plus, why was PacMan doing running & jogging days before the fight?

Manny has too many parasites and scavengers in his camp. The assistants have their own assistants… Manny shows up 3 hours late for training.
PacMan needs an independent and objective sports performance trainer like Mackie Shilstone.

Comment by chinatravel46 — May 12, 2011 @ 6:01 am

How can you see a good fight when one of the fighters is a coward like “SHAME” mosley? “Retreat Mode”-what a shame for shane.

i guess manny is so good at this point in his career that he literally carries the other guy to the finish line – very flipino -letting the other guy “save face” its a cultural thing sometimes

Comment by vincent — May 12, 2011 @ 11:55 am

So far, everything I’ve read about what Alex have said regarding his work for Manny’s physical improvement is logical, rational and full of wisdom, especially about the pragmatism of not training in high altitude when the commencement of the actual fight is so close, the importance of sleep two days before the bout in exchange for more strenous activities.
As far as I can see, Alex Ariza is one of the best things that came into Manny’s life and boxing career, because of his wisdom in what he does, and when Manny retires and Alex has to move on to another fighters, he’ll be much in-demand; he’ll go a long way, Ariza.
Those who criticize him for whatever reasons are simply envious or just plain stupid.

In response to Manny’s leg problems. I’m an asian male athlete with large calves and I frequently get calf cramps. There are two reasons for this. One is my arch isn’t high enough compared to the size of my calves. Simple orthotics relieved a lot of this. The other was that i was wearing nike’s and they tend to have a narrow arch. When I changed to new balance a lot of my pain disappeared. I know manny has an endorsement contract with nike, but they might be the problem. He need to go to a foot doctor and get an orthotic made for his feet, and then have nike make him a shoe based on his custom sole from the doctor. I guarantee, this will help his calf pain.

Hi tim,
we see that everything Pacauiao does nowadays is food for the eyes of his fans. Some would even pay to watch him in training, i’m sure, which is a delight to behold. But, do you think the international community is amused when it sees Pacquiao repeatedly flicking the ears of some of his team with his fingers, especially Ariza, or when he slaps them suddenly? I do not deny that it is in our nature, as Filipinos, to be humorous whenever and wherever, even in not so pleasant situations sometimes, but this joke-impulses of Manny that involve not so tender physical stinging on some people on his team, especially on Ariza, which are seen in all of his documentaries all over the world, might not be amusing to all; it might, in fact, be exasperating to some non-filipino fans and simple boxing followers alike, especially those who do not understand our culture. So, does this have to be done when the cameras are rolling?
As I see it, it reflects something between a king and his people: whatever the king does, his people supply, even laughs. It’s high and the mighty and its supplicants; sorry, but its obscene.

Comment by vincent — May 12, 2011 @ 12:55 pm

And Manny should have chased Mosley and annihilated him? Simple as that? Was he chasing a wounded chicken in a backyard?
What if Mosley, despite his seemingly apparent survival mode, suddenly saw an opening to throw his right BOMB with all his might while he was being recklessly followed? Was Pacquiao too stupid of not considering that possibility? Of course, he was aware of that, that’s why he was cautious no matter how strong was his urge to satisfy the audience with a spectacular ending.

Comment by goko — May 12, 2011 @ 9:06 pm

To John. That I agree on your suggestion. Check Nikes web site. They also have variety of selections of shoes for flat footed, arc footed and toe footed. But these selection are only for running shoes. Boxing shoes is different and so is basketball shoes. Yes I agree, check with a specialist and have Nike custom made a shoe… I hope Pacquiao read your suggestion. And hope these nut heads surrounding Pacquiao would open a suggestion. Roach, Alex and Buboy should be wise enough. Unless Nikes shoes of Pacquiao was already custom made with the right specs. Then it was muscles stress or fatigue.

Tim, I know Manny’s team saw the fake article that leaked about some supposed “Filipino sparring partner” who injected Manny with steroids. But did you know Shane Mosley tweeted this too? He was quiet since the loss but since the link spread, he’s been actively talking about it, even saying that Manny’s the strongest puncher he’s been with. His girlfriend is tweeting it too and calling Manny the Shame of the Philippines and that his championships were wrongfully won. Sounds like they’re really bitter and had to deflect Mosley’s HORRIBLE performance. But after reading the replies to his tweets, it has completely backfired on him. Fans lost a lot of respect, including me.

I can’t believe some people are trying to point fingers as to why Pacquiao didn’t display vintage form. One person under scrutiny is Alex Ariza. Some people have mentioned that he may not be the right fit for the team – that’s absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. I am a strong supporter of Alex – he has put so much effort, energy and time into getting Manny 100% ready. Yes, you see the team joking around at times – that’s good team dynamics – team pacquiao will never show what really goes on behind the scenes – it’s like showing the answers before taking the test. Manny’s endurance is a gift from god – some compare him to the energizer bunny for having copious amounts of energy. People also need to give Alex credit – he has helped with Manny improve his conditioning. One person can’t succeed on their own – they need a team that shares the same goal – that’s what have.

As a fan was I satisfied? Answer is No – only because I have an strong appetite for ko’s and tko’s, and watching Pacquiao fights fill my appetite most of the time.

Was I disappointed with Manny’s performance? Answer is No – He did his best – it’s must be really frustrating to chase his opponents around the ring. I think his cramps resulted from chasing Mosley around – once he got knocked down and felt Manny’s punching power – Mosley decided to run, and run he did!

Comment by goko — May 13, 2011 @ 10:03 am

To Jos.. I agree with you.. But theres also a big issue. Roach and Pacquiao or team Pacquiao probably did not see it coming. “Mosley back pedaling”. Pacquiao could not get into Mosley. Like Cotto, except Pacquiao was able to trap him in the corner by cutting the ring in the 9th round. Pacquiao has also a disadvantage in reach. He has to step in. So chasing a boxer like Floyd Jr. is rediculous. Floyd jabs while backing off. I hope Roach sees this issue especialy to the nest fight which is JMM. Its gonna be a common thing from now on. Opponents of Pacquiao will be back pedalling.

Comment by MarkD — May 13, 2011 @ 11:22 am

I’m actually a fun of Alex Ariza. He’s a really good conditioning coach that knows exactly what his doing, what to say and how to react around his trainees. Most importantly, he knows how to adopt on everyone’s culture. In this particular interview, he hit it right at the button that it takes to 2 to fight. As far as the left calf was hurting, as mentioned by MP that it was his problem before that he didn’t work on for this fight because he didn’t think that it was an issue. Alex also mentioned on his other interview that its possible dehydration and it was taken cared off during the fight. The pain eventually went away.

If you have followed MPs camp horse playing is nothing new. Even Manny mentioned it before he loves to have everyone around to keep him entertain. However, when it comes to business and time to be serious the whole team knows exactly when to stop and stay focus.

Alex, you are best on what you do and don’t let this become a distraction. By the way, I’m not a boxer but just a fan who knows to admire people with good talent.

Comment by RG — May 13, 2011 @ 11:37 am

From the time Ariza started training Manny, his power increased significantly without sacrificing his speed. It does not matter how he did it for as long as Manny is in tip top shape during the fight.

No matter what, Manny should stick to Ariza every time he fights. The bonding and chemistry between the two are more important than the criticism he gets from the those naive writers.

Comment by Floyd — May 13, 2011 @ 5:21 pm

Alex, it is time for you to speak out again about accusations of Manny being on steroids.

Comment by Adam — May 14, 2011 @ 10:23 am

I am going to be quiet frank here, alot you guys writing negative comments pertaining to this article seriously need to sit back and evaluate your life. How many of you guys know anything about psychology, team dynamics or even how to be successful. Bottom line is Team Pacquiao are successfula and have been successful for a long time now. Therefore, so long as Pacquiao is achieving his aims in life and in Boxing everything is going like clock-work!

People who are writing that they don’t like the ‘fun and games’ type atmosphere..I just want to say this is not your Team and you are not Manny Pacquiao! It works for him as you can see by the standard he has set; which in my opinion is a true testament to the hard work and effort that Alex Ariza, Freddy Roach and Co put in. Well done Guys!

Comment by Adam — May 14, 2011 @ 10:35 am

And just before I forget, before people carry on with the whole steriod accusations and converstaions. Im not sure what fight you guys were watching on Saturday. But, how in the hell is Shane Msley going to give Manny a half decent fight if he is going use his right hand sparingly like it’s fractured, and not put any combinations together? It is a no-brainer, if your going to be fighting a world class fighter and all your going to do is Jab Jab Jab…your going to get your ass handed too you! period! It was more like: jab – retreat, jab -retreat. Shane hardly ever pressed Pacquiao. And too be honest with you he did the same thing with Mayweather… HE just Jabbed! So in future Shane really needs to put combinations together unless he’s fighting an old aged pensioner.

Comment by Andy — May 15, 2011 @ 4:37 am

I fully agree with Alex. He is a good condtion coach. It needs two to tango. It is easy to say do this and that but inside the ring it is different thing. I appreciate what Manny did in boxing. What i do not like is too much touching of gloves and embracing, after the fight is okay but not during the fight. Hand shaking and tapping of one shoulder is enough to show your sportmanship. But hugging??? it is very awkward to look at. Please reserve it to Jinkee his lovely wife.

Comment by Manny Fan — May 16, 2011 @ 5:28 pm

take a look at this video, according to Mayweather he is saying he is ready to fight Pacquiao, I dont believe it, but please look at the video, I hope Manny responds to him . http://fighthype.com/pages/content9938.html

Comment by Rob — May 20, 2011 @ 8:29 pm

Hi Team Pacquiao,

I have an idea. If Manny occasionally gets cramps in his calf muscles during fights, Alex should do a bit of calf muscle work between every round. WHY? Because if the corner isn’t doing anything with Manny’s calves, and then suddenly in round 8 they start working on them when a cramp appears, the other corner might get the psychological boost and maybe a temporary advantage with strategy if they see signs that Manny’s started getting those cramps again. If we work his calves every round, they won’t be able to tell whether he has cramps or not.

And I also want to say great work to Manny and his team. I’m looking forward to the JMM fight. I bet Manny is excited about the prospect of having a hungry opponent in front of him. Let’s bang our gloves together and wave him in!!

I started boxing in 83′ with Mando Ramos as my trainer, all this training gives me 27 plus years in boxing. I have been an amatuer boxer and have had hundreds of rounds in sparring with many champions. Mando Ramos has always taught me to spar hard so excuse me if I hurt your pro or champ fighter. That’s the case with Manny Paquiao, his trainer Freddie Roach stood Mando Ramos up on a sparring date. On july 1st ,2008 Manny and I were supposed to spar, I am known for letting champions know something new, you really aren’t the best and you have to put your mind and body on an higher level. All skills and tactics that Manny has did not come from Freddie Roach, they came from watching me and Mando Ramos, the truth comes out. Who am I? I’m the boxer that learned all the work skills in life, married 20 years and still boxing. I now have Ray Ramos, (Mando’s Dad) Ray is 87 years old and has over 70 years of boxing including his time in the Army with the boxing team Rocko Marcigano was on also. When you see me boxing it looks like I’m in the air doing moves at super sonic speed. Check out “The Distance Film” by Ash Adams.

No question Manny, Freddie and Buboy World Class and All Time in their responsibilities. For a trainer and dietition to lead their charge into dehydrated state, you’ve got to question their abilities. SOLUTION. Upon heavy exertion and lots of sweat, magnesium and potassium loss follow. Correct supplementation solves the problem. If this happens in the ring or any time not able to supplement, place upper lip between thumb and index finger, squeeze lip with moderate force for 20 seconds and cramp will start to disappear. Also, if you want to feel in round 8 like you just started round 1, do this – place medium size towel in water hot as you can stand it for a couple of seconds. Remove from water and wring out with hard twist. Open briefly, couple of seconds, and then quickly run towel over entire body head to foot. There – cool as a cucumber. Also works if you’ve just come from mowing the lawn. Boxers will need to repeat after every round and it will work every time. Corner men using ice water will be surprised. Another thought – if Manny is getting stonger, why no more Marquez knockdowns? My best to all. I’ve written this to wild card gym several fights ago and no reponse. Is there someone out there who can get through to them? I’d like to know someone is making use of this. Write Old Codger 85733-3864 USA
